the art of curating

Photography by Rachael Reid

In a month where we’re being blasted with January interior trend reports and “in and out” lists, it can be a time when we start to look at our homes and fall into the comparison trap. All of a sudden, “neutrals are out; colour is in” and as I look around at my creamy-white walls, I wonder if I need to make a trip to Home Depot to keep up with the Jones’. But trends are, by definition, temporary. They come and go, driven by the constant human need for novelty. Cultivating a timeless and personal style is a much more sustainable approach to interior design.

Curating is an artform that values quality over quantity. It involves investing in pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but built to last - well-crafted natural materials, classic colours, and traditional designs. The art of curation prompts us to think more deeply about our purchases and whether they can stand the test of time. Investing in pieces that withstand trends becomes a declaration of a commitment to a lifestyle that values longevity and sustainability.

Curating is a deeply personal journey that extends beyond social media and industry trends. It’s about developing a personal style that is a true reflection of YOUR individual taste, values, and aspirations. Thrifting and antique shopping play pivotal roles in this process, allowing for the discovery of items that resonate with your unique identity. Developing a personal style through curating is an ongoing exploration, a journey of self-discovery that evolves with time and experience. I’m sure we’ve all experienced buying the “trendy” item, only to feel bored months later after seeing it everywhere you go.

At the heart of curating is the unwavering trust in your instincts and affections. It's a departure from external validations and an embrace of self-assurance, affirming that the most curated spaces are those infused with genuine passion and love for the chosen pieces. So as you look around your home today, look for that ornament sitting proudly on your shelf for years that still brings you joy, the well-loved book with it’s peeling cover that you’ve moved house with so many times, and the art up on the wall that you never tire of (whether it’s a picture of a special vacation or a sketch from your kid) and remind yourself that THIS is the art of curating.
